Chile is a safe, super friendly country to cycle around, and what a country it is, though narrow it includes some of the world's driest desert, most verdant National Parks and the breathtaking Torres del Paine region. The Altiplano region is one of the best for wilderness biking in spectacular country: expect snow capped volcanoes, desolate, white salt flats dotted with flamingos (who protect themselves from predators at night by crowing together in the middle of the lakes.), hot springs and expansive plains. This is a remote region and settlements are sporadic, the only tracks around are those linking the villages, which are mostly four wheel drive tracks. The distances between even basic civilisation means you'll need to plan your tip carefully and be prepared to be self sufficient - when you get to a settlement you may not be able to buy more than a few tins of tuna, you'll also be camping. While this isn't a technically difficult region to ride in you do need to be fit to do it and you'll probably want a week to explore it. While the locals are friendly you'll be more focused on the dramatic scenery changes biking in this region affords.
