Thousands of pilgrims travel to Puri each June for Ratha Yatra or the Chariot Festival. The festivals main event is the procession through the streets of three vast temple shaped chariots covered in ornate carvings. Images of Jagannath, the Lord of the Universe and his brother and sister ride in the chariots and pilgrims all aim to touch the chariots ropes, which is the most auspicious act of the festival (though very dangerous considering the crowds.). Musicians playing loud drum and tambourine music accompany the procession and children lining the route join in the cacophony. Food stalls spring up over night to cope with demand from pilgrims and there are parties, circus style performances and dancing in the streets.
