The Yowie is a large, hairy hominid primarily reported in New South Wales and along the Gold Coast of Queensland, formerly known as the Yahoo but given the name “Yowie” in the 1970s. The most famous sighting of the Yowie would have to be from 1912, when the beast was seen by a surveyor named Charles Harper and his traveling companions along the Currickbilly Mountain range in New South Wales. To quote the description given it by Loren Coleman and Jerome Clark in their book Cryptozoology: A to Z, the Yowie seen by Harper “had a very small, chinless human face with deeply set eyes and long canine teeth. It was bipedal, covered with long red-brown hair, and stood almost six feet tall. It seemed to have large breasts or a potbelly hanging down between its legs.” The Yowie has become as popular in Australia as Bigfoot is in North America, with new sightings reported on in newspapers and merchandise manufactured depicting the Yowie. Reports of the beast continue to occur and be noted by researchers such as Tony Healy or Michael Williams, who have investigated sightings and interviewed witnesses, amassing a huge body of data concerning the Yowie. Australia’s Bigfoot is a great choice for those travelers who seek to see Down Under while looking to have a cryptid experience.
