‘Snowboarding in Whistler’Whistler is probably the biggest resort I’ve ever been to and it’s got three big parks and lots of guys who really know what they’re doing to go with it. It’s got a reputation for heavy powder and when I was there it was definitely living up to it’s reputation. Lots of people think it’s going to be more of a skiing resort, but I found there were plenty of cliffs and ridges which were great for freeriding as well as smoother runs good for speed. Some of the books say that locals wont tell tourists where the best powder spots are, but luckily I know enough people who work in resorts to know who to ask, so I saw some of the best powder I’ve ever seen, but really it’s a huge place and there’s plenty to go around. Locals will give you advice about the busy times and how to avoid queuing all day for the lifts if you ask nicely, they’ll also probably tell you which runs are best for boarders at the moment because they know the conditions best, so it‘s worth asking. I found that some of the smaller runs were actually some of the best for me. I usually look like I’m admiring their work, remember their gear and try and catch them around the town in the evenings. I went in February which is the middle of the season, but the guide books say there’s good snow between November and April.

Review by expert member ‘Heli-skiing in Whistler’Heli-skiing takes the thrill of winter sports to a whole new level, and high above the pristine, sugar-dusted pines and snowy valleys of Whistler, those in search of the purest powder can gaze down on the twisting ski tracks and tiny people miles below and ski the best untouched terrain imaginable. Heli-skiing does involve flying to the most inaccessible slopes by helicopter, and being left alone amongst the overwhelming glory of Canada's highest peaks, but intermediate-level skiers and snowboarders can have as full an experience here as the experts, due to the great variety of slopes on offer. Organised heli-skiing groups of differing abilities are regularly organised, so plenty of guidance is on offer for those who require help in choosing suitable sites. There are hundreds of enormous, sweeping glacier slopes and sheltered, zig-zagging tree runs of varying lengths and levels of steepness, and so few skiers use these slopes compared to the official resort options that every day is almost guaranteed to offer a new stretch of perfect snow.

Review by editor ‘Whistler’Whistler is undoubtedly one of the world's top ski resorts, offering a variety of superb skiing as well as fantastic facilities away from the slopes. Whistler is North America's biggest resort, with the greatest vertical rise -5,279 feet- and a ski area that is not only the biggest in North America, but is twice the size of Aspen. The combination of challenging mogul fields, steep chutes, heli-skiing, secluded tree skiing and wonderfully groomed pistes ensures a vast array of skiing on offer to skiers of all abilities. Furthermore, the fun yet effective ski school offers a great way to enhance children's confidence on the slopes. However, such is Whistler's success, overcrowding has become a problem both in the mountain restaurants and on the various lifts, though it's a sacrifice worht making to experience this truly excellent resort. Shopping facilities are excellent, as are the array of other sports on offer, providing much entertaining for non-skiers, whils tthe après-ski offers a typically lively and fun atmosphere.
