‘Chaminox for beginners’Obviously a great place for the off piste and extreme enthusiast but it’s also excellent for the beginner. You do have to put up with travelling around on bus unless you have your own vehicle!
Review by expert member ‘Boarding Chamonix’This is another obvious choice, but for me I just love boarding against a backdrop as inspiring as Mont Blanc. Like everyone says it does look like a chocolate box view and I can’t look at a Toblerone box without wishing I was there. On the practical side the town is a proper town as opposed to a resort town so there’s lots to do if the weather turns bad or if you’re staying for more than a week or two. It’s got a lot of space with a good selection of terrain over five main sections of mountain and though they’re not close to each other there’s a good shuttle between them. If you think boarding is improved by the view like I do, you’ll like Vallee Blanche which is off a glacier from Aiquil du Midi, you need to get a guide to take you up there, even if you‘re an experienced boarder. Most boarders prefer the runs at Le Tour, which are wide and packed well so they’re good for speed, but I thought Les Grands Montets was pretty good as well. If you do go for Le Tour the back side is better than the front. The best boarding is between December and April.

Review by expert member ‘Chamonix’You only need to be an intermediate skier to do the 20 km long Vallee Blanche run down the Mer du Glace glacier from the Aiguille du Midi. This requires a guide and is probably the most spectacularly scenic ski run in the world.

Review by member ‘Chamonix’Easily accessible from Geneva, Chamonix Mont Blanc offers a huge choice of challenging skiing, making it the ideal escape for advanced skiers seeking a short break. The array of ski areas results in a segmented resort, necessitating the use of the gondolas and cable cars to navigate across the mountains, although the stunning scenery makes this task less labourious than it may initially seem. The lack of appealing mountain restaurants and the peak time lift queuing problems typify the inconvenience of the resort. Although the skiing is not best-suited to beginners, the wide range of non-skiing activities will entertain those unable to take on the more difficult slopes. The cobbed streets of the traffic-free town centre provide personal touch to this busy resort.

...Over the last couple of decades, since it overtook Austria as our destination of choice, France has taken an ever-increasing share of the UK market. The growth last season was unusually small: according to the annual Ski Industry Report published by the biggest UK tour operator, Crystal, France's market share increased by only 0.4 per cent. The report probably underestimates the number of "independent" skiers making their own arrangements, travelling predominantly to France. Nevertheless it puts the country's market share at 37.5 per cent.
Such dominance is unsurprising, given that France cannot be bettered as a ski destination. Why should we go further afield, when the closest place for serious skiing is also the best? When people ask me about far-flung ski destinations – New Zealand, say, or Chile – I habitually mention their virtues, and then point out that they can't compare with France...
