See more Volcanoes. See best of Kilauea in United States.

Kilauea is sometimes called “the world’s most active volcano” due to its voluminous lava output, though visitors who hear this and expect to see spectacular explosions are going to be disappointed……unless they are incredibly lucky and catch a very rare lava fountaining episode or get to see the explosions that sometimes occur where lava enters the sea. More commonly, lava flows can be observed at close range, a sight that is especially beautiful after dark. When the lava flows reach the sea, the sometimes violent contest between fire and water attracts many visitors. Be very careful when hiking near flowing lava, especially if the lava has recently covered vegetation - an event that can trigger potentially deadly methane explosions. Where the lava has entered the sea, do NOT walk on the recently formed lava bench or shelf as these have a habit of collapsing without warning, taking unfortunate lava enthusiasts with them. Another attraction of the area is the world’s longest lava tube, Kazumura Cave, which has a wealth of lava formations within its astonishing 40 miles of mapped tunnels. Local Harry Shick gives guided tours for cavers (entrances to the cave are on his property).
