Monet painted this famous series, the best known of his works, after his eyes had begun to deteriorate and it was his greatest focus towards the end of his life. The largest collection of Nympheas, also known as Water Lilies, is at the Musee de L'Orangerie in Paris and is displayed under a glass roof according to Monet's wishes (allowing for the best natural light). A painting from the series, which was among the last of his works, was sold this year to a private collector for $18.5 million in a sale at Sotheby's.
