Pala D'Oro

See more Works of Art. See best of Venice in Italy.

A stunning Byzantine altarpiece, the Pala D’Oro was commissioned in 1102 by doge Ordelaffo Falier. It is a complex structure, depicting a huge range of biblical figures and scenes. While the altar was used for certain celebrations in St. Mark’ s Basilica for several hundred years, it currently resides safely in the Church Museum.
