Lakes in West Coast, United States
Crater Lake, though not a volcano in the usual sense, is one of the most dramatic non-erupting volcanoes to visit, because it was created by a volcanic eruption 42 times that of the 1980 St. Helens eruption. It's a vast caldera that has filled with water over time to become a lake. There isn't much living in the lake because there are no tributaries running into it, which means the water appears unusually blue. It's an amazing place to visit with a huge variety of easily accessible volcanic rock to examine. |

Volcanoes in Aeolian Islands, Italy
If you are trying to see a volcanic eruption the most reliable volcano is Stromboli, because there are small but dramatic looking eruptions happening several times a day and gas can almost constantly be seen billowing from the crater. |

Volcanoes in Mountain States, United States
Underneath Yellowstone National Park is one of the earths biggest supervolcanoes, and scientific studies have recently shown that seismic activity there is increasing. The whole Yellowstone system is expected to blow at some point in an eruption 2,500 times that of St. Helens in 1980, that would cover North America in ash. Scientists believe Yellowstone’s eruption cycle is once every 600,000 years, and it’s been 640,000 years since the last one… Supervolcanoes usually lie dormant for several thousand years before erupting, but increased earthquake activity means that this may occur sooner than was thought, however other scientists see the recent activity as normal fluctuation and say that there is no eruption in the foreseeable future. Those facts and the hot spring and geysers created by the magma only a few kilometres beneath the surface make Yellowstone an important volcanic site to visit. |

Volcanoes in Cyclades Islands, Greece
This area is renowned for it’s historic volcanic activity, memorably the destruction of the Minoan empire and the burial of one of it’s cities. Some people (mostly people who live there) believe that Santorini was the fabled sunken island of Atlantis. The shape of the area and it’s islands has been constantly shaped by volcanic activity, this island being severed from that and new islands being created. Not only that, it’s beautiful to visit. Tourists can visit the steaming lava islands of Santorini Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni off the coast of Santorini and take a dip in the hot springs. |

Volcanoes in Naples, Italy
This is probably the worlds best known volcano. As well as visiting Pompeii and seeing the damage a volcano can do to a city, Vesuvius is an impressive backdrop for any trip. It’s also relatively easy to get to, you can drive up to within 200 metres of the summit. You then have to climb almost vertically on a spiralling walkway to get to the rim, but it’s worth it. |
